Before studying Indian culture it is very important to understand what culture is. Looking at the various narratives received for learning about culture, we find that the word culture itself encompasses many dimensions of human life. Culture has always been an important contributor to human development. Different parts of culture are directly and indirectly connected to various needs, desires and activities of human beings.

भारतीय संस्कृति के अध्ययन के पूर्व संस्कृति क्या है यह समझना अत्यन्त महत्वपूर्ण है। संस्कृति के विषय में ज्ञानार्जन हेतु प्राप्त विभिन्न वर्णनों पर दृष्टिपात करने पर हम पाते है कि संस्कृति शब्द स्वयं में मानव जीवन के अनेक आयामों को समेटे हुए है। मनुष्य के विकास में संस्कृति का सदैव से ही महत्वपूर्ण योगदान रहा है। संस्कृति के विभिन्न अंग मानव की विभिन्न आवश्यकताओं, इच्छाओं एवं क्रियाकलापों से परोक्ष तथा अपरोक्ष रूप में जुड़े है।
