Various classification methods have been adopted from time to time to give a simple and systematic form to Indian ragdari music. An important dimension of this series of classification is 'Raganga-Raga Classification System'. As the name suggests, the raga of the raga is 'ragang', that is, that particular melody of a particular raga, which represents the raga and gives a personal identity, that is 'ragang' and 'ang' means the form of the raga. Certain swar communities and their inherent rhythm-transmission and various musical ornamentation such as meed, kan, gamak etc. are from specific components, from which the distinctive form of the raga emerges.

भारतीय रागदारी संगीत को एक सरल एवं सुव्यवस्थित रूप प्रदान करने हेतु समयानुसार विभिन्न वर्गीकरण पद्धतियों को अपनाया गया है। वर्गीकरण की इसी श्रृंखला का एक महत्वपूर्ण आयाम है - ‘रागांग-राग वर्गीकरण पद्धति’। जैसा कि नाम से ही स्पष्ट होता है कि राग का अंग ‘रागांग’ है, अर्थात् किसी राग विशेष की वह विशिष्ट स्वरावलि, जिससे राग का प्रतिनिधित्व हो और एक निजी पहचान प्राप्त हो वह ‘रागांग’ है तथा ‘अंग’ का अभिप्राय राग के कुछ निश्चित स्वर समुदायों व उसमें निहित लय-संचरण एवं विभिन्न सांगीतिक अलंकरण यथा - मीड़, कण, ग़मक आदि विशिष्ट अवयवों से हैं, जिससे राग का विशिष्ट स्वरूप उभर कर आता है।
