Ancient Indian sages and thinkers propounded rituals for personality development and meaningfulness of social life. The rituals prescribed in religious texts destroy the mental disorders of humans from before birth and inculcate purity in them. All the things that exist in the world are natural. Just as all things are made to suit one's needs and used, similarly, purity is inculcated in humans through rituals and defects are removed. Determination of time is of utmost importance in performing rituals. Which ritual should be performed when and how, i.e. which time will be appropriate for which ritual and which will not? Knowledge of this situation can be known only through astrology.

प्राचीन भारतीय ऋषि-मनीषियों ने व्यक्तित्व विकास तथा सामाजिक जीवन की सार्थकता के लिए संस्कारों को प्रतिपादित किया। धर्मशास्त्र विहित संस्कार जन्म के पूर्व से ही मानव के मनोविकारों को नष्ट करके उसमें पवित्रता का समावेश करते हैं। संसार में जितनी वस्तुएँ विद्यमान हैं, वे सब प्राकृतिक हैं। जिस प्रकार सभी वस्तुओं को अपने अनुरूप बनाकर प्रयोग में लाया जाता है, उसी प्रकार संस्कारों के द्वारा मनुष्यों में शुद्धता का समावेश करके दोष दूर किये जाते हैं।संस्कारों के सम्पादन में कालनिर्णय का सर्वाधिक महत्त्व होता है। कौन सा संस्कार कब और कैसे करना चाहिए अर्थात् किस संस्कार के लिए कौन सा काल उचित होगा और कौन सा नहीं? इस परिस्थिति का ज्ञान केवल ज्योतिषशास्त्र के माध्यम से ही जाना जा सकता है।
