BHISHMA SAHNI'S ART OF TRANSLATION: MULTICULTURAL DIALOGUE AND THE SEARCH FOR LITERARY BEAUTY

Abstract [English]

Translation is a creative process, which does not only transfer words from languages, but also works to build bridges between cultures, emotions and ideologies. It is a cultural dialogue in which language is only the medium, while meaning, context and sensibility are its root. The tradition of translation in Hindi literature has been very rich, in which many writers have enriched Hindi literature by translating great works from different languages. Bhishma Sahni's contribution in this tradition is unique.
Bhishma Sahni was not only a novelist, storyteller and playwright, but he was also a careful translator, who introduced Indian readers to world literature, especially by translating Russian literature into Hindi. He did not consider translation as just a process of translation, but saw it as a deeply creative act, where the translator gives a new sensibility, a new form to the text. In particular, his translations of Leo Tolstoy, Maxim Gorky, and other Russian writers reflect his linguistic skills, cultural understanding, and excellence in expression.
This article will critically examine the art of translation of Bhisham Sahni, in which his major translations will be studied, his translation vision, craft, style, and ideological aspect will be analyzed. Through this, an attempt will be made to understand why and how he holds a special place in Hindi translation literature.

अनुवाद एक सृजनात्मक प्रक्रिया है, जो केवल भाषाओं के शब्दों का स्थानांतरण नहीं, बल्कि संस्कृतियों, भावनाओं और विचारधाराओं के सेतु निर्माण का कार्य करती है। यह एक सांस्कृतिक वार्ता है जिसमें भाषा मात्र माध्यम होती है, जबकि अर्थ, संदर्भ, और संवेदना उसका मूल होता है। हिंदी साहित्य में अनुवाद की परंपरा अत्यंत समृद्ध रही है, जिसमें अनेक साहित्यकारों ने विभिन्न भाषाओं से महान कृतियों का अनुवाद कर हिंदी साहित्य को समृद्ध किया। इस परंपरा में भीष्म साहनी का योगदान अद्वितीय है।
भीष्म साहनी केवल उपन्यासकार, कथाकार और नाटककार नहीं थे, बल्कि वे एक सजग अनुवादक भी थे, जिन्होंने विशेष रूप से रूसी साहित्य को हिंदी में अनूदित करके भारतीय पाठकों को विश्व साहित्य से परिचित कराया। उन्होंने अनुवाद को केवल भाषांतर की प्रक्रिया नहीं माना, बल्कि उसे एक गहन रचनात्मक कर्म के रूप में देखा, जहाँ अनुवादक पाठ को एक नई संवेदना, एक नया रूप प्रदान करता है। विशेषतः उनके द्वारा किए गए लेव टाल्सटॉय, मैक्सिम गोर्की, और अन्य रूसी लेखकों के अनुवाद उनके भाषा-कौशल, सांस्कृतिक समझ और भाव-संप्रेषण की श्रेष्ठता को दर्शाते हैं।
