Abstract [English]

Nowadays cinema's influence on public opinion can also extend to a different realm. Cinema being the most powerful medium for both entertainment and to influencing society by its reflection. From thought-provoking fictions to eye-opening non-fiction, movies have the capability to transform public opinion and even initiate societal change. In this paper, we will try to explore the impact of cinema on social development and how the filmmakers are using it as a tool to address social issues. Cinema serves as a catalyst for development of social construct by addressing critical issues like discrimination, patriarchy, system failure in most creative way. Being the most powerful medium, it also can be explained as the reflection of the world we live in and they portray the struggles, triumphs, and challenges faced by individuals. By portraying real-life issues on screen, films develop a niche for viewers to engage with various perspectives. If anyone compares the cinema of yesteryears with today’s contemporary cinema, one would notice a drastic transformation not just in techniques but also in the type of themes directors are incorporating for the audience. Concepts are closer to social themes, depicting the real picture of the world.
This work tries to deal with the fact that how commercial hindi cinema has changed over time and established into a new form altogether. A form where not just hero and heroine are fighting to win over their love but also to tell the story making audience more aware about society. This paper is deep analytical study of Rajkumar Hirani’s films to find social construct embed in cinema nowadays. The study analyses four popular films of Rajkumar Hirani: Munnabhai M.B.B.S. (2003), Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), 3 Idiots (2009), PK (2014). This paper delves into how Hirani’s films where he goes beyond traditional commercial elements and address social issues while engaging with contemporary audiences in meaningful ways.
