Abstract [English]

From 1956 to 2020, the Narmada Valley—a historically important region in India—has witnessed tremendous cultural, social, and economic changes. This paper examines the multidimensional impacts of the development projects of the Narmada Sagar Project (NSP). Agricultural expansion, industrialization, and improved water management were all outcomes of these programs, but they also created serious social and environmental problems. The economic and cultural stability of nearly 200,000 individuals, most of whom were from tribes, was disrupted when they were displaced to other locations and faced many obstacles that hindered progress in their rehabilitation program. The obstacles were not adequately addressed by these rehabilitation programs, indicating that there were gaps in the implementation of policies. Deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and changes in the river ecosystem are environmental impacts that further blur the success story. The Narmada River is a symbol of strength and perseverance for the affected people, and its cultural and spiritual significance remains unwavering despite these hardships. This study highlights the need for a holistic development strategy that incorporates social justice, environmental protection, and economic prosperity. These results are intended to contribute to policy conversations by providing insights for future initiatives that attempt to balance development with human and environmental well-being.
