Abstract

A somatosensory interactive system based on computer vision and augmented reality (AR) techniques using the Kinect device is proposed, on which a game of harvesting three kinds of fruit can be played for food and agricultural education. The Kinect is used to capture users’ motion images, the Unity3D is used as the game engine, and the Kinect SDK is used for developing programs, to implement the tasks of face detection and tracking, hand-gesture recognition, and body-model matching and tracking involved in fruit-harvesting activities. AR-based photos of the harvest result can be taken and downloaded as souvenirs. The system was exhibited and observations of the users’ performances as well as interviews with experts and the users were conducted. The collected opinions were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the system, reaching the following conclusions: 1) the interactive experience of using this system is simple and intuitive; 2) the use of body movements for man-machine interaction is given positive reviews; 3) the introduction of somatosensory interactive education can arouse participants’ interest, achieving the effect of edutainment; and 4) the experience of taking commemorative photos can achieve the publicity and promotion effect of food and agricultural education through sharing on social media.

Chao-Ming Wang, Department of Digital Media Design, National Yunlin University of Science & Technology, Douliu City, Yunlin County, Taiwan 64002, ROC

CHAO-MING WANG received the B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in computer science and information engineering from National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu, Taiwan, in 1980, 1982, and 1993, respectively.

From 1982 to 2003, he was a senior specialist at National Chung Shan Institute of Science and Technology. From 2003 to 2008, he joined the faculty of the Department of Information Communication at Yuan Ze University, Taoyuan, Taiwan. In 2008, he moved to the Department of Digital Media Design at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (YunTech). From 2010 to 2013, he was the Head of the Department of Digital Media Design and from 2016 to 2017, he was the Director of the Design-led Innovation Center, both at YunTech. From 2010 to 2013, he was the President of the Taiwan Society of Basic Design and Art. He is currently an Associate Professor at YunTech.

Dr. Wang’s current research interests include computer vision, tech art, human-computer interaction, and interactive multimedia design.

YU-HUI LIN received the B.S. degree in Information Application from National Taichung University of Science and Technology, Taichung, Taiwan, in 2017, and the M.S. degree in Digital Media Design from National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (YunTech), Yunlin, Taiwan, in 2020. From 2017 to 2020, she was a research assistant in the Interactive Multimedia Design Lab, at the Department of Digital Media Design at YunTech. She is currently a front-end website developer at Geng-Yun Technology Inc., Taichung, Taiwan. Additionally, she is also studying interactive technologies applying computer vision, human-interface design, and user experience design.

Miss Lin's research interests include computer vision, human-computer interaction, and interactive experience.
