Indian folk and tribal art constitute an integral part of India’s cultural heritage, reflecting the collective consciousness, belief systems, rituals, and close association with nature of diverse communities. Unlike classical art traditions that developed under royal or institutional patronage, folk and tribal arts emerged organically from everyday life and social practices. This research paper examines the conceptual, historical, and cultural dimensions of Indian folk and tribal art, with a focus on major traditions such as Madhubani, Warli, Gond, Pattachitra, and Pithora painting. The study analyzes their distinctive visual language, symbolism, materials, and techniques, emphasizing the use of natural resources and ritualistic contexts. Furthermore, the paper explores the impact of modernization, globalization, and commercialization on these art forms. While contemporary markets, tourism, and digital platforms have expanded economic opportunities and global visibility for artists, they have simultaneously generated challenges related to authenticity, cultural appropriation, and the dilution of traditional values. The research highlights the importance of sustainable preservation through education, institutional initiatives, policy support, and digital empowerment of artists. The paper concludes that Indian folk and tribal art are not merely decorative practices but living cultural expressions that embody continuity, resilience, and the socio-cultural identity of indigenous and rural communities in India.
