The role of folk and tribal elements in contemporary Indian art has been extremely important and significant. Amidst the rapid influences of modernity, globalization, and technological advancements, Indian artists have maintained a connection to their cultural roots. Folk and tribal arts are expressions of the lifestyle, beliefs, traditions, relationship with nature, and collective consciousness of Indian society. Contemporary artists are drawing inspiration from these traditional art forms and presenting them with new ideas, modern mediums, and contemporary contexts, thereby giving Indian art a unique identity.
This study presents an analysis of the form, application, and socio-cultural significance of folk and tribal elements in contemporary Indian art. Contemporary artists have incorporated the colors, lines, symbols, and narratives of folk and tribal art forms such as Gond, Bhil, Warli, and Madhubani into their works with new meanings and perspectives.
The incorporation of folk and tribal elements in contemporary Indian art makes it more sensitive, vibrant, and connected to society. This trend establishes a balance between tradition and modernity and proves instrumental in maintaining cultural continuity. At the same time, it highlights the originality and distinctiveness of Indian art on the global stage.
Therefore, it can be said that folk and tribal elements not only enrich contemporary Indian art aesthetically, but also serve as a powerful medium for social consciousness, cultural preservation, and creative innovation.
