In the history of Indian literature, the view of seeing literature and history as complementary to each other has been going on for thousands of years, that is, since our tradition. In Indian tradition, at one time, the entire writing was seen in the special context of poetry. That tradition continues in Sanskrit poetry till Jagannath. In ancient literature, history was known as the science of Puravritta, and scholars have identified Puravritta as the Vedas.

ભારતીય સાહિત્યના ઇતિહાસમાં સાહિત્ય અને ઇતિહાસને એકબીજાના પૂરક તરીકે જોવાની દૃષ્ટિ હજારો વર્ષોથી એટલે કે આપણી પરંપરાથી ચાલી આવી છે. ભારતીય પરંપરામાં એક સમયે સમગ્ર લેખનને કાવ્યના વિશેષ સંદર્ભમાં જોવામાં આવતું. એ પરંપરા સંસ્કૃત કાવ્યશાસ્ત્રમાં જગન્નાથ સુધી ચાલે છે. પ્રાચીન સાહિત્યમાં ઇતિહાસને પુરાવૃત્તની વિદ્યા તરીકે ઓળખવામાં આવતી, પુરવૃત્તમાં વેદ તરીકે વિદ્વાનોએ ઓળખાવ્યો છે.
