Gurmati poetry is the name of a powerful ideology that emerged under the Bhakti movement. Which began with the advent of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. In this ideology, apart from the Guru poets, the ideas of 30 other saints, devotees and great men are considered. In the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, when the Bhakti movement emerged in India, Indian society was entangled in the illusion of ritual and caste division. The condition of the people was very pitiful. Shudras were treated worse than dogs. A dog could climb a well, but a Shudra was not allowed to climb it. Even his shadow was considered bad. People from the lower caste, Akhoti, were not allowed to enter temples. They could not read the Vedas, nor could they worship, and they were not even allowed to chant the name of God.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਕਾਵਿ ਧਾਰਾ ਭਗਤੀ ਲਹਿਰ ਅਧੀਨ ਉਭਰੀ ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਸ਼ਾਲੀ ਵਿਚਾਰਧਾਰਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੈ। ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਆਰੰਭ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਆਗਮਨ ਨਾਲ ਹੋਇਆ। ਇਸ ਵਿਚਾਰਧਾਰਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਵੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ 30 ਹੋਰ ਸੰਤਾਂ, ਭਗਤਾ ਤੇ ਮਹਾਂਪੁਰਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਨਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੈ। ਤੇਰਵੀਂ ਚੌਦਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਦੋਂ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਗਤੀ ਲਹਿਰ ਦਾ ਉਦਭਵ ਹੋਇਆ, ਭਾਰਤੀ ਸਮਾਜ ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡ ਅਤੇ ਵਰਨ ਵੰਡ ਦੇ ਭਰਮ ਜਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਲਝਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਜਨਤਾ ਦੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਬਹੁਤ ਤਰਸਯੋਗ ਸੀ। ਸ਼ੁਦਰ ਨਾਲ ਕੁੱਤਿਆਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵੀ ਮਾੜਾ ਵਰਤਾਉ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਇੱਕ ਕੁੱਤਾ ਤਾਂ ਖੂਹ ਤੇ ਚੜ ਸਕਦਾ ਸੀ ਪਰ ਸ਼ੂਦਰ ਨੂੰ ਚੜਨ ਦੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪਰਛਾਵਾਂ ਵੀ ਮਾੜਾ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ। ਅਖੋਤੀ ਛੋਟੀ ਜਾਤ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਦਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੜਨ ਦੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਵੇਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੜ ਸਕਦੇ ਸਨ ਨਾ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਸਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਲਈ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਦੀ ਵੀ ਮਨਾਹੀ ਸੀ।
